studio_newyork_newdelhi was founded as a research and design studio on the ethos of exploring shared indian diasporic craft and hence for the first preview, it felt only right to dig into archival textiles, tucked away in multi-generational familial closets. In the depths of such hidden treasures, was a piece of my mother’s wedding trousseau, revealing encyclopedic craft and preserved history.
The curiosity of re-interpreting the craft in a modern lens led to experimentation with the placement of the elements found in the sari, non-traditional dabka colours and mixed media elements and placements, a graphic retelling of traditional practices.
As the rajasthani craftsmanship revealed itself, it felt only right to draw homage from the city, and the motif on the garment, inspired by one on the Patrika gate in Jaipur, serves as a sort of modern retrospective on the opulence and grandeur of the city.
